Shadow of the Legacy
by Genie Gabriel
A letter from his dead father with a confession of killing a woman throws a shadow of suspicion over the life of an easy-going cop. When he returns to his hometown to find the truth, he discovers love with a woman determined to be no more than friends.
"I think you're doing the right thing."
Rochelle stared at Johnny. He seemed to be the one person who didn't have his own opinion of what she should do to be sure the cancer didn't return.
"You know your body better than anyone else," Johnny said. "Do what you feel is right."
Johnny's smile grew as Rochelle continued to stare at him in amazement. "Well, thank you for being supportive."
"And you thought I was just another pretty face."
"With a smart-mouthed attitude."
They laughed together.
"So what are you doing today?" Rochelle asked.
"Hanging out with you."
"Your turn to watch the invalid, huh?"
Johnny shrugged. "Your mom is concerned."
"I know she cares. It just adds to the pressure to do everything right and not die."
"Cancer isn't a death sentence any more. Luella Alvord shared some of her story while we were gone. It's been twenty years since her cancer was removed."
"I'm glad she's opening up and letting people be her friend. She seems pretty lonely."
"She doesn't have to be lonely in Halo. There's always someone ready to gossip." Johnny grinned again. "So what are your plans today?"
"Preparing for a full body-mind-spirit cleanse with Rena in a sweat lodge."
"Why don't you ask your mother to join you for a sweat?"
Rochelle looked at Johnny oddly. "I'm not sure she would."
"I've done a sweat."
"You?" Surprise lifted one of Rochelle's brows.
"Told you I was more than a pretty face." Johnny's almost perpetual grin appeared once more. "Ask your mom. You might be surprised."
I'm a crazy optimist whose rose-colored glasses have bent frames and cracked lenses. When life kicks me in the teeth, I find miracles and lessons I refused to learn an easier way.
In fact, I live with a small herd of miracles in the furry forms of dogs, who are constantly trying to teach me to forgive, to play more, and to love without limits.
I write about people who find courage and integrity in the darkest times of their lives, who rescue stray dogs and kittens, who find a person they would willingly give their lives for, and who make their little corners of the world a better place.
People have remarked my stories "aren't what they expected." With rose-colored glasses firmly in place, I take that as a compliment.
If you want to sample these stories, you can find excerpts on my Web site <www.GenieGabriel.com>. I try not to give away the entire story line, but rest assured there will be happy endings.
I invite you to share a piece of my world in the pages of a book, and hope our time together will feel like a hug from a cherished friend.
