Birthdays and Reminiscence
Thank you Lila for haivng me on your blog. I’m excited to be
here, especially because I consider you a friend and I’m a big fan of your
work. J
Next Tuesday happens to be my birthday and since I’m being
reflective here about another year, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts
with your readers. I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that really
celebrated birthdays. With the five
girls and extended family living close by, our birthdays were always a big
family event.
When we were younger, the days were magical with big
parties, our friends and special surprises. As I got older, the parties change
into pool parties with friends or if you are lucky, that big “sweet sixteen”
party. I had one of those at the local
“Eagles” hall. I felt like a princess
that night.
As an adult, birthdays seem to go by the wayside. They might turn into a lovely dinner out with
your family or an evening among friends.
But gone are the pony rides and pinatas. I remember one birthday shortly
after I turned nineteen and was married and living away from home, my parents
hadn’t called to wish me a happy birthday and I went by all day in a funk. It
was like the sun fell from the sky. No one acknowledged the passing of another
year.
Having my own children changed my feelings about birthdays a
lot. I see them differently now. They are more than just a party but as a mom,
I did want to make sure my children had the best birthdays ever. I think that
they did! Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t
the bigger is better over the top party parent. I picked certain ages that they
could have a special party for. However there was this one time we had all of
the girls over in my daughter’s first grade class for a sleepover. I don’t know why they call it a
sleepover—Noone slept!
Back to this year…it isn’t a milestone year. I’m turning forty-six. I had to think about that for a moment and do
the math. I don’t feel “that old”. I still feel like I’m only in my twenties or
thirties. And fortunately I don’t look my age. But I am proud of my age and my
birthday. To me, it’s a celebration of the knowledge and confidence I’ve
gained. And while I still love the idea of a big party with all the people I
know and love, a small intimate dinner with just my family is still the best
present of all.

Melissa Keir has always wanted
to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Her love of books was instilled by her mother
and grandparents who were avid readers. She’d often sneak books away from them
so that she could fantasize about those strong alpha males and plucky
heroines. In middle school and high
school, Melissa used to write sappy love poems and shared them with her friends
and still has those poems today! In college her writing changed to sarcastic
musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won
awards for her writing. You can find many of these musings along with her
latest releases on her website and blog.
Melissa doesn’t believe in
down time. She’s always keeping
busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an
elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, an editor for a publishing company
as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady
Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of
laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often
seen plotting her next story.
Melissa loves hearing from
readers!

In Protecting His Wolfe, family is important to Detective
Jonah Pigg as well. He took over his brothers’ care when his parents died
suddenly and has worked hard to make sure they remain a close family. But
Jonah’s protective insticts are strong for more than just family. When he meets
Betsie Wolfe, a woman who witnesses a murder and becomes a target of the
killer, he brings her into his home to keep her safe.
Blurb:
Betsie Wolfe was a small town girl who left
her cozy little life for a job in the big city. She never expected to become a
witness to a murder or face vicious threats. Detective Jonah Pigg was
immediately attracted to Betsie’s lavender eyes and small frame huddled in the
gray wool blanket when he arrived on the scene of the murder.
When threats on Betsie's life surface, Jonah takes her into his home under the protection of the three Pigg’s who own the Pigg Agency. It will take all of his detective work to keep her safe. Passion has a way of igniting when people are in stressful situations and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other’s arms. But is their relationship only a matter of desire or is it something more?

Excerpt:
She’d never been so chilled.
Huddled in a blanket in one of those uncomfortable waiting room chairs, Betsie
was shaking after the horror of what happened.
Johnny is…was…had been such
a nice guy to me. He made sure to always say good morning to me and treated me
with respect. Who could’ve done this? Betsie
wondered if it had anything to do with what she overheard the other night. Could
Johnny have been involved with the drugs?
With many thoughts going
through her mind, Betsie didn’t hear the police detective walk over to her. He
cleared his throat and put his hand on her shoulder to get her attention.
“Yikes, you startled me!”
Betsie yelped as her cheeks burned from embarrassment.
Looking up
at the detective, Betsie noticed first how tall he was, and then she noticed
his broad shoulders under his tan jacket. This is a guy who looked like he
could take care of himself, she thought. Betsie couldn’t seem to draw her
eyes away from him. His dark hair was cut military short, drawing your gaze to
his deep blue eyes. I’ve always been a sucker for blue eyes.
