Celebrating Independence!

Welcome to the Hop!

Independence Day…You know as a military wife I could go crazy with this topic and I could go in so many directions. I could climb up on my soap box and really break this subject down, but I decided today…we’d take a little trip down Memory Lane…
You see, even before I met and married my very own true fighter for our freedom, Independence Day was a big event in our neck of the woods. There were fireworks, running through the garden hose spray, sunburns, hot dogs, potato salad and watermelon…and more fireworks. My family wasn’t real big on the real big ones…they scared my Mom a bit and not because of the big noises or big lights. She was always afraid one of us would get hurt with the darn things. But we had plenty of sparklers, bottle rockets, and those cool fountains of color. I loved those. Oh, and Roman candles, although I have yet to understand why on America’s Independence Day we were using something Italian. Go figure…
But, the thing that strikes me most is the fact that we understood early on from a very young age what Independence Day meant and what we were celebrating. It wasn’t just a day to eat until we were sick then play with fireworks until there were no more of them left. It was a day to celebrate our country’s birth. Which, in my humble opinion, has become a side-burner issue in a lot of households these days. I don’t think kids really understand or maybe even know what it is we’re shooting off all the colorful displays for. Which, in my humble opinion, is a sad state of affairs.
After growing up and marrying that fighter of our freedoms I call husband now, our Independence Day took on an even great meaning, although we had military men in our family long before him, there’s something about being married to your own that just brings something deeper to the table. I guess it becomes more personal at that point. I come from a long line of men and women that have served and am proud of that. Proud that they stood for something greater than themselves. I’m grateful for all men and women out there that fight to keep those ideals and principles alive that were founded some two hundred thirty six years ago (actually it was prior to that, the date just signifies the signing of the declaration), but I admire my husband for being one of them and am grateful for him every day. Without all those people who’ve come before us, I wouldn’t be able to be here today chatting about what Independence Day is really all about and reminding everyone to be sure to take the time to explain to your children what we’re doing besides eating and watching the fireworks displays and running through the sprinklers. Take a moment to explain to them what the day really means.
Now, in case I’m a new author to you and you don’t know, I not only write some hot erotic romance reads, I write military romance as well. Check out my titles over in my available works section if you’d like and get familiar with  my military characters…and keep in mind, I have a whole host of new military characters joining them throughout the rest of the year.
Now on to the prize portion of the program. J I’m giving away a $10.00 Amazon gift card at the end of the hop…how do you enter? Simply go to the right ------------à There’s a red sign-up button over there for my newsletter, give it a go and you’ll be entered to win. Now, I realize I have a lot of faithful followers that come along for these hops all the time and I want them to know I’m grateful for that and appreciate their support and don’t want them to feel left out as they all already get my newsletter monthly, so if you’re already a subscriber, leave me some comment love and there will be a drawing from those comments for a special prize at the end of the hop just for you…it’s also a surprise, so keep your eyes peeled. 1. Hi Lila! such a nice post.I was thinking the same thing yesterday--that we tend to forget the reason for the day, as I watched my 10th ad for an appliance sale!(I thought Geo. Washington had reserved that). When my husband was alive we always had a big fireworks display--& he'd pick one adolescent boy to help--they loved it! Happy 4th (my blog's about a different 4th memory..) Meredith

  2. A lovely ,touching post Lila. I've always admired the way Americans celebrate Independence Day.....we don't have a National day..in fact it seems we have to apologise for being English.
Have a great day on Wednesday!
    Hugs xx

  3. What a great post. Thank you to all the service men and women that have defended this great country. I always made sure that my kids knew why we were celebrating and when my oldest son joined the Army I was so proud. After he came back from Iraq the fireworks were difficult for him so we tended to stay away. Now that he has his angel wings, my grandkids told me that the fireworks were for Uncle Dane to say thank you and we love you. I like that.

  6. Hi everyone! Thanks for coming by! Susie don't ever apologize for being English...I myself think you guys rock when it comes to pageantry, the Queen's celebration was tops! (Secretly I often wonder what would have been had we lost...don't tell anyone...I might be a Duchess somewhere now instead of an enlisted wife. ;)Hi Meredith! I'm looking at Pier One clearances today, don't feel bad about the appliances. ;) Not our fault they put out good deals on all the holidays. Hi Sue! Thanks you so much for your families service. Hi Laurie! Happy Canada Day! Hope you had lots to eat and drink at all the celebrations. :) Welcome aboard April! Hope you enjoy reading my offerings....

  7. I love the 4th of July! I love being in a country that celebrates our founding history! Our kids are very well aware of why we celebrate. I find that they are so much more grateful for being able to celebrate and enjoy it immensely!

  8. What a wonderful post. I love getting family together for a bbq. Our city puts on fireworks that we can walk to which is fun. Though my favorite fire works were the displays at Disney Land.

  15. I agree and I have to say I am so proud of my son at the age of 14 has a great deal of respect for our Miltary. He idolizes my father who is a Vietnam vet and is always asking questions, in fact he says he hopes my dad will give him his dog tags someday. On all the days we celebrate and honor our wonderful men and women who have served as well still serve he is the first to make his thoughts known of how proud he is of not just his grandfather but his cousin who served in Irag.

if it wasn't for those men, 100's of years ago we wouldn't have the freedoms we have now.
